Gerber Multitool Model
I created this 3D model of my multitool as my final project for my Fusion 360 class. The multitool that I chose to model was given to me by my grandfather when I was younger. Since receiving it I have used it a lot in my daily life so it is something that I am very familiar with. Although I had used fusion a decent amount before taking the class I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the techniques and tools available. Because of this I was confident that I would be able to make a faithful recreation of the actual tool. My goal with the project was to make the design as close as possible to the real tool. I took accurate measurements using a pair of digital calipers and used reference images for the pieces with more complicated shapes. Every tool and piece is a different component and joints are applied to make it function exactly like the original. When looking at the completed project I think that I accomplished my goal and it is very cool to have an accurate digital representation of the tool that I created myself.
My process for creating the model was pretty straightforward. The first step I took was making all of the different components in my design. I made a component for each individual part of the multitool. I considered attempting to take the multitool apart but decided that if I could avoid it I did not want to risk breaking it. By opening all the tools fully I was pretty confident that I could measure it without taking it apart. I started with the handles first since that would make it easier to build everything off of. After finishing the handles I decided that they looked accurate enough for me to not take the tool apart so I continued with the rest. I modeled the multitool as if every tool was open and the pliers were extended. After I finished all the pieces I applied joints and limits to them so they would move correctly. Once I had done that I moved everything so it appeared closed and I captured the position. Below are dimensioned drawings of all the different components.
